Frequently Asked Questions
What is Microblading?
Microblading is a semi-permanent makeup procedure whereby hair-like incision strokes are created using ink along the eyebrow to enhance, reshape, fill, cover gaps of lost hair to extend the eyebrows, or fully reconstruct eyebrows with little to no hair.
Is Microblading for me?
While semi-permanent makeup is great for most people, some individuals are not suitable for these treatments. Please read the following permanent makeup contraindications carefully, to evaluate if you are an eligible candidate. If you have questions about any of these, call us at 202-320-2949 or email us at contact@naturalbrowsmb.com
Ineligible Without Exception
Individuals under 18 years of age
We cannot Microblade anyone under 18 years of age, even with parental consent.
Women who are pregnant or nursing
As the body is going through hormonal changes, it is more prone to infections. Your skin may change and results can be unpredictable.
Epilepsy
It is unsafe to undergo treatment in case of a seizure.
Individuals with Pacemaker or major heart problems
We use epinephrine, as a numbing agent, that can increase your heart rate possibly causing dysrhythmias.
Individuals with viral infections and/or diseases
The risk of developing an infection is higher in people with compromised immune systems.
Individuals with Lupus
The risk of developing an infection is higher in people with compromised immune systems.
Individuals who have undergone Organ Transplant
The risk of developing an infection is higher in people with compromised immune systems.
Individuals with any kind of skin condition on or near the treatment area
Eczema, dermatitis, rosacea, psoriasis, or any one of these skin conditions may compromise the surface and texture of the skin. Procedures performed on skin with these types of conditions may have poor results.
Individuals who are allergic to metal and certain inks
We use small needles and pigments that can contain some metals and ink, so allergy can be a show stopper. Contact us to find out more at contact@naturalbrowsmb.com
Individuals prone to EXTREME keloids
Since permanent makeup punctures the skin, there is always a risk for people that are prone to extreme or frequent keloids to heal with keloids scaring. It is normal for some people to experience minor keloids, which typically do not show up in your brows after microblading. This is specifically speaking to cases of extreme keloids. Contact us with questions at 202-320-2949 or contact@naturalbrowsmb.com
Individuals who used Accutane
Accutane alters the skin and makes it thin, dry, and sensitive. It also weakens your immune system. For those reasons, you’ll need to one year after your Accutane treatment is completed and your skin is back to its normal state.
Eligible With Doctor Clearance and Note
Individuals undergoing chemotherapy
Although permanent makeup is great for enhancing your look, we require a doctor’s note in order to perform the procedure for anyone undergoing chemotherapy. Once you’re cleared from your oncologist we can book your appointment. Permanent makeup is a great solution for cancer survivors.
Individuals with Diabetes
It is important that your condition is stable and under control. Please consult with your physician and provide us with a doctor’s note.
Individuals with Thyroid Condition
The color of your brows can fade faster when taken with certain thyroid medications.
Individuals with Glaucoma
The risk of developing an eye infection is higher.
Individuals with High Blood Pressure
Your blood pressure has to be at a stable condition. You may have slightly greater bleeding than the norm. Excessive bleeding during the procedure can dilute and expel the pigment color and lead to poor results.
For individuals that have any uncertainty regarding their pre-existing conditions, or are under the supervision of a physician, please consult with your doctor before booking an appointment and provide us with a doctor’s note.
Does it Hurt?
The procedure is not painful, however, a minor level of discomfort should be expected. We employ the Double Numbing technique, which includes pre-numbing & in-procedure numbing of your brows. This further ensures our clients do not feel pain.
Not all microblading salons perform this numbing technique, which is one reason some people experience more pain than others. Further, there are some things that can increase your level of pain though, so please review the Before Care instructions here. To learn more about microblading and pain, check out our blog post on the topic.
Is it permanent?
The procedure is not permanent. It is considered semi-permanent and lasts up to 1 year. Touchups are required every 9-12 months to maintain shape, color, and detail. If you do not come in for touch-ups, the results will simply fade away. Your touch-up frequency often depends on a number of factors including:
- Skin type (oily skin fade faster)
- Pigment color used (lighter colors fade faster)
- Excessive sun exposure (over time can cause fading and discoloration of the pigment)
- Use of daily anti-aging/acne products e.g.- (Tretinoin (Retin-A) & Alpha Hydroxy). These products increase your cell turnover rate and will shorten the life of your cosmetic tattoo. Also, you cannot be actively taking any of these at the time of getting your tattoo.
Do you have to remove the eyebrow hair I have?
No. Microblading is designed to enhance the eyebrow structure you already have. While there may be minor shaping involved for stray hairs, none of your natural hairs are permanently removed.
